Advocate for achieving growth in the Housing Program in Camagüey

Camagüey, Jan 31. - Achieving the gradual recovery of the housing construction program and reversing the deterioration of the housing stock stand out among the priorities of government strategies that are now focused on addressing a problem so sensitive for the population.

In recent years, the construction of new homes has been marked by resource limitations, a deficit of qualified labor on-site, a lack of technicians in the municipal housing directorates, and delays in the procedures requested by the population, such as applying for a building permit and obtaining a certificate of habitability once the construction phase of properties is completed.

In response to the directives of the central government, work is underway in Camagüey to reorganize the housing program which, in the plan set for 2026, should complete 128 homes through the state plan, 229 houses subsidized by the State budget for people with low incomes, and 244 through self-help efforts.

In a dialogue with housing officials and construction companies in the territory, the coordinator of programs and objectives of the provincial government, Jesús Alonso, reported that a schedule was established to achieve greater progress in the works. For this, he stated, checking permits and approving permits to initiate construction actions with the required technical preparation and within the agreed timeframe is crucial.

During the current year, work will focus essentially on rehabilitation, maintenance, and new construction based on the budgets approved in the 13 municipalities; priority will be given to properties that are in the final stages and depend on a minimum of resources.

On the other hand, the plan includes continuing with the start and development of new homes, the elimination of earthen floors, and attention to the maternal-child health program. It was reported that to achieve the necessary takeoff in housing construction, Camagüey must seek alternatives to increase local production of construction materials, expedite the adaptation of premises for homes and multifamily buildings, as well as incorporate the construction of housing modules using shipping containers.

The construction program for the year will also respond to homes affected by meteorological phenomena, and other entities for a total of 671 homes. (Alex López Almaguer/TV Camagüey) (Photo: TV Camagüey)
